# Configuring Automation and Approval Rules in Walley

> Enable transfer pre-approval and merge delegation in Walley, understand what each setting authorizes, and how expiry and renewal work.

Walley offers two automation settings that reduce how often you have to approve routine on-ledger actions. Both live in **Settings**, both are opt-in, and enabling either one is itself an on-ledger action you review and sign — nothing is enabled by default.

<Warning>
  Enabling automation means certain future actions complete without a per-action confirmation from you. Understand what each setting does before enabling it, and review your activity regularly. Completed on-ledger transactions are irreversible.
</Warning>

## Transfer Pre-Approval

By default, every incoming transfer arrives as a pending **offer** that you must manually [accept or reject](/guides/sending-receiving). Transfer pre-approval removes that step: with it enabled, incoming transfers complete automatically without your explicit acceptance each time.

This is useful when you receive frequent transfers — for example from an app you trade on — and accepting each one individually is impractical.

### Enabling it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Settings">
    Navigate to **Settings** in the Walley interface and find the **Transfer Preapproval** card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable and sign">
    Select **Enable Transfer Preapproval** and sign the resulting transaction. The pre-approval is recorded on-ledger; its status shows **Pending Approval** until it becomes active, then **Enabled**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### Expiry and renewal

A transfer pre-approval is valid for a limited period. When it expires, incoming transfers go back to requiring manual acceptance, and the Settings card offers **Renew Transfer Preapproval** — select it and sign to keep receiving transfers automatically.

<Note>
  Pre-approval applies to **incoming** transfers only. Outgoing transfers always require your review and signature, with or without pre-approval.
</Note>

## Merge Delegation

On Canton, your balance in an asset can be spread across many separate holding contracts — each incoming transfer typically creates a new one. Fragmented holdings make transfers less efficient. Merge delegation allows the network to **merge your holdings** into fewer contracts on your behalf.

### Enabling it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Settings">
    Navigate to **Settings** and find the **Merge Delegation** card.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enable and sign">
    Select **Enable Merge Delegation** and sign the resulting transaction. The status shows **Pending Approval** until active, then **Enabled**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Merge delegation only authorizes **consolidating** your existing holdings — combining several holding contracts of the same asset into one. It does not authorize transfers to anyone else, and your total balance is unchanged by a merge.
</Note>

## Your Responsibilities When Using Automation

* **Understand what you've enabled.** Pre-approval auto-completes incoming transfers; merge delegation auto-consolidates your holdings. Neither lets anyone else spend your funds.
* **Review your activity.** Check your dashboard's transaction history periodically to verify automated activity matches your expectations.
* **Let pre-approval lapse if you no longer want it.** Pre-approvals expire on their own; simply don't renew if you'd rather accept transfers manually again.
